Barney is the floating face of the show—and what a suspiciously confident face it is.
With his perfectly arranged ghost-hair, half-awake eyes, and permanent little smirk, Barney looks like someone who has already heard the joke, forgotten it, and decided to tell it anyway. He considers himself a legendary entertainer. Whether anyone else agrees depends heavily on how low their standards are.
As host, Barney welcomes the audience, introduces each performance, explains the rules when he remembers them, and turns Billy’s supernatural suffering into family entertainment. Billy may see a haunted house; Barney sees a studio with excellent atmosphere and free furniture.
Barney loves attention, dramatic entrances, and jokes made at somebody else’s expense. Intelligence is not his greatest weapon, but confidence certainly is. When a plan goes wrong, he simply announces that it was part of the show. When something breaks, he points toward the Stage Crew. When the audience boos, he assumes they are saying his name incorrectly.
Behind the theatrical ego, however, Barney is fiercely committed to keeping the show alive. Silence terrifies him more than any ghost ever could. He will improvise through disasters, arguments, collapsing scenery, and Billy begging everyone to leave his house.
Some claim Barney became a host because he loves entertaining people. Others believe he simply found a microphone and refused to give it back.
